Halloween 2006

Happy Halloween!

Kitchen Renovation Begins

I got an e-mail today from my kitchen designer telling me the kitchen renovation begins next Monday. I have one week to completely empty out my kitchen, move the refrigerator and stove, and move my living room around to accommodate all the deliveries. This is going to be a very busy week. I know it will be worth the mess for a few weeks but I hate having things out of place. I'll do my best to put up with it and hope the boyfriend is patient with me during the whole process.

Halloween Party

Last night the boyfriend and I went to a winery for a Halloween Party. We went to the same party last year and had a great time so we decided to do it again this year. This year we wore the same costumes as last year. The party was a little more sedate but still fun. The boyfriend even got out on the dance floor and danced with the other couple (a straight couple) we went with. We enjoyed the wines and the atmosphere. There were less drunk people at this one. We had a great time and enjoyed having an extra hour to sleep once we got home.

Here's the boyfriend dancing in his seat just after dancing on the dancefloor. He worked up a sweat! I was too busy taking pictures to dance. Plus, I don't dance.

View From The Balcony

While the boyfriend was out playing tennis, I decided to get a shot of the fall view I have from my balcony. I'm not sure what the conditions have to be to produce such nice fall colors but this year the colors seem to be just beautiful. Here's the view I have from my balcony. I think I have a great view to watch the fall colors. I love fall!

Happy Birthday iPod

Happy Birthday, iPod!

Five years ago today Apple introduced the first iPod changing the way we buy and listen to music forever.

The View From Bed

I was laying in bed snuggling with the boyfriend when my eyes became aware of the morning sun. Through my eyelids I could tell the morning was beginning. We were facing his window while we snuggled. I opened my eyes to see the sun shinning on the tops of the trees outside his window. The sun highlighted the bright fall colors: oranges, yellows, reds! It was absolutely beautiful. I stayed still listening the boyfriend breath while taking in all the colors. After awhile I asked if he could see (he wears glasses) and told him to open his eyes and see what I was seeing. This is what we saw:

Just Cancel It

Why is it when you call a big company like Cox Communications to cancel a service they try to talk you into new services and offer you so much to stick with them? That drives me fuckin crazy.

I just wanted to cancel HBO and the movie tier from my cable service and they offered me 3 months of HBO for free and they wanted me to sign up for their phone service. I didn't want either! I finally had to tell the guy to just cancel it! I hate listening to their shpeal. No wonder I don't answer the phone anymore.

Have a great weekend.

Homophily

Homophily is the tendency of individuals to associate and bond with similar others.

This is the reason why liberals and conservatives don't get along. And it's the reason why we have such extremes in beliefs in our country right now.

Step outside your circle and introduce others to your way of thinking. The others might learn something from you and you might learn something from them. We also might reduce the extremes we currently have between liberals and conservatives. What do you think?

Red

Yesterday my old iPod Nano froze up. I was trying to update the podcats I listen to and when I put it in the dock the Apple showed up on the screen and didn't go away. I've tried everything that is suggested on the support site but nothing has worked. I considered taking it to the Genius bar at the Apple store but didn't care to wait in line. I've had this Nano for awhile and have considered getting a new one. So once the old Nano died yesterday I decided to look into the new ones. I thought about getting the new Shuffle but I really like having a display to see what is playing and being able to select different things to listen to. I really like the red color of the new one and can feel good knowing that some of the sale will go towards the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. So today I went ahead and ordered a new red Nano. It will probably take a week or so to get here. Until it arrives I'll be using my older, clunky 20 gig color iPod.

Of course next week Steve Jobs will probably introduce a new iPod.

When To Buy A Pumpkin

It's that time of the year again. It's the time when people begin buying pumpkins to decorate for Halloween. The boyfriend and I have seen pumpkins for sale for several weeks now. Each time we see them we say it's too early to buy pumpkins. Surely they will rot before Halloween.

So how soon before Halloween do you buy a pumpkin? Two weeks? If the weather is warm then the pumpkin will rot but if the weather is cooler then the pumpkin will last until Halloween. The weather here got much cooler last week so I guess the pumpkins will last longer now…as long as we don't have a warm spell.

13th

Are you scared today? Will something bad happen? I don't have those fears. Many do though. When my condo building was built they skipped the 13th floor. That's kind of like a republican thing. Pretend it's not there and you won't have to deal with it. In truth we do have a 13th floor. It's the top floor of the building but they call it the 14th floor. What's up with that?

"There is nothing to fear but fear itself."
-Franklin D. Roosevelt

I would add we should fear the republicans creating more fear in America.

Warner Out

Before the 2008 Presidential election has really begun, one of my favorites is already out. Today Mark Warner, former governor of Virginia, announced he won't be running in the '08 election. Too bad. I thought he might be one who would have a chance. It's still early though. We have plenty of time to find another strong candidate.

Here's the article in the Washington Post. (You have to register but it's free.)

I know it's really early and there are several names already being kicked around but you have to wonder who might jump in. Who do you think might run in '08?

Bad Blogger

I have not been a very good blogger lately. I haven't been updating my blog on a regular basis after I said I would start updating more often. Even though there have been things going on, I just haven't recorded them on here much. It's been a week since my last post. I really should think of something to write about on here.

I could write about the new fall season of TV but there are so many shows I'm watching that it would take too long and you probably already know about the shows I'd be watching anyway. I do like the show "Brothers and Sisters" on ABC. It comes on after Desparate Housewives and has a bunch of stars in it. There are also some cuties on the show. There's even a gay character!

I could write about National Coming Out Day...which was yesterday...but I've already come out and don't really need to go through that again. Hopefully some others came out and are feeling good about it.

The news is another topic I could discuss but I think the republicans are doing a good job of changing the upcoming elecction on their own. And then there was that plane crash yesterday. And global warming. And North Korea. The list goes on and on.

I guess I just gave you an update. I'll try to do a better job of posting more on here in the future.

The Next Book To Read

I just finished reading America's Boy by Wade Rouse. It didn't take me as long to finish this book as it did the last. I think the reason is because I could relate to this guy so much in the book. What I thought was going to be a very funny memoir turned out to be a very serious look at family relationships, death of a sibling, being fat, and dealing with coming to terms with your sexuality.

Of course I'm a bit overweight so I could relate to the being fat part, and I could relate to the dealing with teasing in middle school from the bullies, but I couldn't relate to the death of a sibling. It was interesting how he weaved the stories of his childhood around the dysfunctional family issues with his brother's death. The book was very interesting and I did enjoy following his life and learning about his coming out and losing the weight and having things turn out just fine in the end. Check it out, it's a decent read. You'll enjoy it.

The next book on the nightstand is Tush by Jaffe Cohen. I first heard about this book on the podcast Remarkably Mark. I love his show and when I heard the author talking about his book on the show, I just had to check it out.

Here's what the publisher has to say:

"After his zodiac chart is read by a great psychic, Joel Eisenberg studies astrology and becomes the most famous media queen in the field. The author of a best-selling book and a nationally syndicated radio show regular, Joel manages to parlay his intuitive skills, gift for gab, and unbridled shamelessness by getting all the cute guys home for a reading and convincing them to expose their rear ends for a dose of 'chakra balancing.'

But now it's 1997. There are no more phone calls and Joel is publicly humiliated on his radio show. Believing that he should travel north to meet the soul mate who's been predicted for him, Joel goes to Cape Cod. Looking for a man who "paints houses," Joel moves into the home of Dennis Fairchild, a successful artist with a stupendous rear end. What Joel doesn't realize is that his real soul mate is probably Bill Doyle, the 'house painter' living in Dennis's backyard, fixing up the artist's home, drinking heavily, and still commun-icating with his deceased lover.

A comic tale of karmic redemption, Tush shows that when we're foolishly pursuing the wrong goals, the universe wisely knows how to make us suffer for our stupidity."

Sounds like it will be a fun book and I'm looking forward to checking it out. Of course I'll talk about it once I've finished reading it.

I Love Fall

Fall is my favorite time of year. Winter is nice for the cold days, spring is nice for the flowers, and of course summer is nice for the time off but fall is the most beautiful time of the year for me.

I love when the weather changes. The crisp nights and warm days make it easier to sleep at night. You can turn of the AC in your house and open the windows and let that fresh air come in. You can also turn the AC off in your car and let the cool air flow over you while you drive. The smog or haze that hangs over many cities seems to disappear and we have more clear days.

The colors that emerge during the fall are the most beautiful colors in nature. The yellows, oranges, reds, and browns of a maple tree make you appreciate the changes that take place in nature. I love seeing the trees transform from green to the brilliant fall hues they’ve been hiding all year. When I retire I’ll have to take a road trip to New England in the fall.
